Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus transmitted mainly through intimate skin-to-skin and sexual contact. Certain HPV types can cause HPV-related cancers or genital warts. Gardasil 9 helps protect against nine HPV types and is available for both women and men.
Gardasil 9 helps protect against nine HPV types:

By protecting against these types, Gardasil 9 helps reduce the risk of:
Gardasil 9 helps prevent new infections caused by vaccine-covered HPV types. It does not treat an HPV infection, genital warts, or abnormal cell changes that are already present.
HPV vaccination is most effective when given before exposure to HPV.
Routine vaccination is generally recommended at age 11 or 12 and may be started from age 9. Catch-up vaccination is recommended through age 26 for people who were not previously vaccinated or did not complete the series.
Some adults who have not been adequately vaccinated may still benefit from vaccination. The decision can be made after considering previous vaccination, sexual history, age, and the possibility of future HPV exposure.
Yes. You may still receive Gardasil 9 after becoming sexually active or after testing positive for HPV.
Having been sexually active does not necessarily mean that you have been exposed to all nine HPV types covered by Gardasil 9. Even if you currently have or previously had HPV, the vaccine may still help protect against other vaccine-covered types that you have not acquired.
Gardasil 9 does not eliminate an existing HPV infection or treat genital warts, abnormal cervical cells, or cervical precancer. Routine cervical cancer screening should therefore still be continued after vaccination.
However, the expected benefit is generally greater when vaccination is completed before HPV exposure.
Yes. HPV can affect both women and men.
In men, HPV may cause genital warts as well as anal, penile, oropharyngeal, and other head and neck cancers. Vaccination also helps reduce the risk of transmitting vaccine-covered HPV types to sexual partners.

For patients who begin vaccination at age 15 or older, Gardasil 9 is generally given as a three-dose series:
If a scheduled dose is delayed, the series usually does not need to be restarted. The remaining doses can generally be continued after reviewing the previous vaccination dates.
HPV vaccination is not routinely recommended during pregnancy. If a dose was given before pregnancy was recognized, the remaining doses are generally postponed until after pregnancy rather than restarting the series. Breastfeeding is generally not a reason to avoid HPV vaccination.
At LANTE OBGYN, patients are generally asked to rest for approximately 10–15 minutes after vaccination. If you feel dizzy, faint, or unwell, you may remain at the clinic for further observation until you feel comfortable leaving.
