Sexually transmitted infections may cause discharge, itching, pelvic discomfort, sores, or urinary symptoms, although many cause no noticeable symptoms. Testing may include vaginal or cervical swabs, urine testing, and blood tests such as HIV and syphilis testing. Appropriate tests are selected according to symptoms, sexual exposure, and individual risk factors.
The terms STD and STI are often used interchangeably.
STI stands for sexually transmitted infection and includes infections that may be present without symptoms. STD stands for sexually transmitted disease and is traditionally used when an infection causes recognizable symptoms or health problems.
Because many sexually transmitted infections remain asymptomatic, STI is now commonly used as the broader medical term. However, many patients still search for and recognize the term STD, so both terms are used on this page.
The tests recommended depend on your symptoms, exposure history, and the type of sexual contact involved.
This panel includes common sexually transmitted pathogens and organisms associated with vaginal or genitourinary symptoms. A broader 24-type full-panel test is also available when more comprehensive testing is needed.
Not every detected organism requires treatment. Certain Mycoplasma and Ureaplasma species may be present without causing symptoms, so results are interpreted together with clinical findings and medical history.
The exact blood tests recommended depend on the type and timing of exposure, previous vaccination or infection history, symptoms, and individual risk factors.
The testing method depends on the infection being evaluated.
A speculum may be gently inserted, and a small swab is used to collect a sample from the vagina or cervix. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for molecular testing.
A small blood sample is collected for infections diagnosed through antigen, antibody, or other blood-based testing, including HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis.
HIV antigen/antibody testing checks for both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen. Testing too soon after a possible exposure may not detect an infection, so repeat testing may be recommended depending on the timing.
A reactive screening result does not confirm HIV infection by itself and requires additional confirmatory testing.
If a possible high-risk HIV exposure occurred within the previous 72 hours, urgent medical evaluation for HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is important. PEP must be started as soon as possible and within 72 hours of exposure.
As PEP requires time-sensitive evaluation and treatment, patients should visit an emergency department or a medical facility that provides HIV preventive care without waiting for routine test results.

Testing may still be recommended when you have no symptoms because many STIs can remain asymptomatic.
A positive result means that the specific organism tested was detected. However, not every detected vaginal or genitourinary organism necessarily requires treatment. Results are interpreted together with symptoms, examination findings, pregnancy status, medical history, and previous treatment.
A negative HIV result may not completely exclude a very recent infection if testing was performed too soon after exposure. Repeat testing may therefore be recommended depending on the timing of the test. A reactive HIV screening result does not confirm HIV infection by itself. Additional confirmatory testing is required.
The next step depends on the infection identified.
Bacterial and parasitic infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and trichomoniasis can generally be treated with appropriate medication. Viral infections such as HIV, herpes, hepatitis B, and HPV require different follow-up and management.

For chlamydia and gonorrhea, repeat testing approximately three months after treatment may be recommended because reinfection is common. The timing of repeat testing or a test of cure varies depending on the infection, pregnancy status, treatment used, and site of infection.
For patients without applicable Korean National Health Insurance coverage:
· A 12-type STD/STI molecular test is KRW 90,000~
· An HIV blood test is KRW 30,000~
· A syphilis blood test is KRW 30,000~
· Combined HIV and syphilis testing is KRW 55,000~
