Emergency Contraception in Seoul, Korea

Emergency Contraception

Emergency contraception may help prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. Options include emergency contraceptive pills and, for appropriate patients, a copper intrauterine device (IUD). Because effectiveness depends partly on how much time has passed and the timing within the menstrual cycle, consultation should take place as soon as possible. It works before pregnancy is established and does not terminate an existing pregnancy.

30-second summary

  • Used after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure — the sooner, the better
  • Prevents pregnancy before it's established; it does not end an existing pregnancy
  • Pill options: levonorgestrel (preferably within 72 hours) or ulipristal acetate (within 120 hours/5 days)
  • A copper IUD within 5 days is the most effective option (>99%) and can stay for ongoing contraception
  • Does not protect against later intercourse — use condoms or another method afterward
  • Generally well tolerated; nausea, spotting, or an earlier/later period may occur
Overview

What Is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception is used after intercourse when contraception was not used or may have failed.

It may be considered after:
  • Intercourse without contraception
  • Condom breakage, slippage, or incorrect use
  • Missed or delayed contraceptive pills
  • Sexual assault without reliable contraceptive protection
  • Other suspected contraceptive failure

Emergency contraception should be used as soon as possible. It reduces the chance of pregnancy from intercourse that has already occurred but does not provide ongoing protection from later intercourse unless a copper IUD is inserted and retained as a regular contraceptive method.

The most appropriate option depends on the time since intercourse, the timing of ovulation, medical history, current medications, body weight, and whether ongoing contraception is desired.

Types

Types of Emergency Contraception

Emergency Contraceptive Pills

Levonorgestrel: A progestin emergency contraceptive pill that should preferably be taken within 72 hours. Its effectiveness generally decreases as more time passes.

Ulipristal acetate: An emergency contraceptive pill that may be taken within 120 hours, or five days. Its effectiveness may be better maintained later in the five-day window than that of levonorgestrel.

Copper IUD

A copper IUD may be inserted within five days after unprotected intercourse as emergency contraception. It is more than 99% effective when used within the appropriate time frame and is the most effective emergency contraceptive option.

A copper IUD interferes with sperm movement and fertilization. Once inserted, it may remain in place to provide ongoing, hormone-free contraception. Suitability should be assessed based on the timing of intercourse, the possibility of pregnancy, infection risk, uterine findings, menstrual pattern, and the patient’s preference.

Effect & Consultation

How Effective Is Emergency Contraception?

No emergency contraceptive pill can guarantee that pregnancy will be prevented. Effectiveness is generally higher when the medication is taken sooner, although ulipristal may remain effective throughout the five-day window.

A copper IUD is the most effective emergency contraceptive method and is more than 99% effective when inserted within the recommended time frame.

Emergency contraception does not protect against pregnancy from intercourse that occurs after the pill is taken. Condoms or another contraceptive method should therefore be used as instructed.

Emergency Contraception Consultation

Before prescribing emergency contraception, the doctor may ask about:

  • The date and time of unprotected intercourse
  • The first day and usual length of the last menstrual period
  • Other episodes of unprotected intercourse during the same cycle
  • Current contraceptive use and possible contraceptive failure
  • Current medications and medical conditions
  • Possible pregnancy symptoms
  • Breastfeeding

A pelvic examination or ultrasound is not always required before prescribing an emergency contraceptive pill. However, pregnancy testing, ultrasound, or additional evaluation may be recommended depending on the menstrual history, symptoms, or timing of intercourse.

The most appropriate option is selected based on this information, together with the possibility of pregnancy and plans for ongoing contraception.

Side Effects & After

Possible Side Effects

Emergency contraceptive pills are generally well tolerated. Possible temporary effects include:

  • Nausea, dizziness, or headache
  • Fatigue or breast tenderness
  • Lower abdominal discomfort
  • Spotting, irregular bleeding, or a period that begins earlier or later than expected

These symptoms usually improve without treatment. If vomiting occurs shortly after taking the medication, the clinic should be contacted because another dose may be needed.

Emergency contraceptive pills do not cause infertility and do not interrupt an established pregnancy.

After Taking an Emergency Contraceptive Pill

The next period may begin earlier or later than usual, and the amount of bleeding may be different. A home pregnancy test is recommended approximately three weeks after the last episode of unprotected intercourse.

If the expected period is significantly delayed, pregnancy symptoms develop, or the home pregnancy test is positive, patients should visit the clinic for pregnancy testing and further evaluation.

An emergency contraceptive pill only reduces the risk of pregnancy from intercourse that occurred before taking it. If another episode of unprotected intercourse occurs afterwards, the previous dose will not provide protection. Additional emergency contraception may be needed, and a copper IUD may be considered as the most effective option when appropriate.

Patients should seek medical care for severe or persistent lower abdominal pain, very heavy bleeding, or fainting.

Cost of Emergency Contraception in Korea

Emergency Contraception Cost

An in-person medical consultation is required to receive a prescription for an emergency contraceptive pill at LANTE OBGYN.

After the prescription is issued, the medication is purchased separately from a pharmacy and generally costs approximately KRW 10,000–30,000. A copper IUD may also be used as emergency contraception when medically appropriate. The insertion procedure costs KRW 170,000.

Consultation, pelvic ultrasound, anesthesia, treatment supplies, medication, testing, and other related fees are charged separately.

FAQ

Emergency Contraception FAQ

How soon should I take an emergency contraceptive pill?
An emergency contraceptive pill should be taken as soon as possible. Depending on the type, it may be taken within 72 to 120 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure.
Is emergency contraception an abortion pill?
No. Emergency contraception works before pregnancy is established, mainly by delaying ovulation or preventing fertilization. It does not terminate an established pregnancy.
Can I take emergency contraception during any part of my menstrual cycle?
Emergency contraceptive pills may be taken at any time during the menstrual cycle when needed. However, effectiveness depends partly on whether ovulation has already occurred, so the timing of the last period and intercourse should be reviewed.
Can I take an emergency contraceptive pill more than once?
If another episode of unprotected intercourse occurs after taking the pill, additional emergency contraception may be needed because the previous dose does not protect against later intercourse. Repeated use may cause irregular bleeding and does not provide ongoing contraception. Depending on the timing and the patient’s preference, a copper IUD may be considered for emergency and continued contraception.
Does an emergency contraceptive pill protect me for the rest of the cycle?
No. An emergency contraceptive pill only reduces the risk of pregnancy from intercourse that occurred before it was taken. It does not protect against pregnancy from intercourse that occurs afterwards.
What should I do if I vomit after taking the pill?
Contact the clinic if vomiting occurs shortly after taking the medication. Depending on the type of pill and how soon vomiting occurred, another dose may be required.
When should I take a pregnancy test?
A home pregnancy test is recommended approximately three weeks after the last episode of unprotected intercourse. Patients should visit the clinic if the expected period is significantly delayed, pregnancy symptoms develop, or the test is positive.
Can emergency contraception affect future fertility?
No. Emergency contraceptive pills do not reduce future fertility. Fertility may return quickly, so another contraceptive method is needed for later intercourse.

Patients should seek medical care for severe or persistent lower abdominal pain, very heavy bleeding, or fainting."
